Sony Looking to “Improve PlayStation’s Competitive Advantage” With New Systems, Tools and Drivers

by Giuseppe Nelva Console platforms are always evolving, and manufacturers often look into pushing the envelope by providing their developers with the best tools to create the best games, but also to make their life easier. Sony seems to be planning to do just that, as revealed by a career opportunity ad seeking a Senior Java Engineer. “SCEA’s Tools and Technologies Group (TNT) provides tools, infrastructure services and run-time technology to a broad set of Sony Computer Entertainment divisions. We work closely with all of our Vita, PS3 and PS4 game teams, and with QA groups from all regions. We have an immediate need for an expert/lead Java/Web/Server software engineer. The successful candidate will be a key contributor in the […]

Get Destiny on Xbox One/PS4 for Free by Buying a 360/PS3 Digital Copy

by Chris Pereira Activision is offering an enticing offer for Destiny that will be of particular interest to anyone who hasn’t yet invested in an Xbox One or PlayStation 4. For a limited time, buying a digital copy of Destiny on Xbox 360 or PS3 will entitle you to a free digital copy on Xbox One or PS4. The deal has very few catches–you simply need to buy the game (or season pass) by no later than January 15, 2015. Because it’s a digital copy you have to buy, there won’t be any way to then give your old game to a friend, which is likely why Activision is willing to offer this. The last-gen version you buy dictates which […]

Free full-version Xbox One game trials coming for Gold members

by Sam Machkovech On Wednesday, Microsoft announced the first-ever free trial of a full, unlocked retail game on an Xbox platform. The first game to receive the “Gold Weekend” treatment will be Forza Motorsport 5, which will become free to download and play for all Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One beginning Thursday, September 4 and lasting until the following Sunday. While nearly all games on Xbox 360, and many games on Xbox One, can be downloaded as free trials, this offer has the distinction of unlocking the full, start-to-finish experience of a game that hasn’t been purchased. It also seems to split the difference between limited trials and the free games doled out to Gold members by way […]

PS4 System Software Update 1.76 Released Today, Improves System Stability

by Dragos Dobre Sony’s PlayStation 4 has just received another update, that once again promises to add a tad more stability to some features available on the consoles. This time the update is a bit heavy, having almost 200 MB — so we can expect for some real improvements. If we got a penny every time a console manufacturer released an update under the tag “improves system stability”, we would currently have our pockets full of money. But that’s a common practice, and we can’t do much about it. However, if it’s mandatory, we should know what it contains. You will have to update your console to 1.76 in order to play online from now on, enjoy! We will update […]

Final Fantasy XV Changes Domain Just Before Sony’s TGS Press Conference: Is it Happening?

by Giuseppe Nelva Final Fantasy XV has always been a bit of a mystery in the gaming industry. First announced eons ago as the PS3 exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII, then repurposed as current generation multiplatform for PS4 and Xbox One after ages of silence, followed by another year of silence. Tomorrow Sony Japan will held it’s pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference, and something just moved that could indicate an appearance of Square Enix’s late blooming JRPG. The publisher just shifted the official website from its original domain http://www.na.square-enix.com/FFXV to http://www.finalfantasyxv.com/. The new domain has been owned by Square Enix for a long while, but has never been used until now. This may or may not mean an appearance of […]

Nintendo has 14 Wii U Games Launching in 2015

by ‘Brandon’ The Wii U is a small system when compared alongside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, even though it has been out far longer than either combined. However, Nintendo is losing support, as more developers have vowed to cease development for the console until more interest is gained. It appears Nintendo intends to support the console still, as they’ve got 14 new Wii U games launching within 2015 for the system. 14 doesn’t sound like many, but it’s 14 more than they had already. Nintendo UK announced the following games will release within next year: •The Legend of Zelda •Splatoon •Xenoblade Chronicles X •Devil’s Third •Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker •Yoshi’s Woolly World •Kirby(working title) •Star Fox (working title) […]

by Britton Peele Amazon.com, Inc. just announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Twitch Interactive, Inc. for “approximately $970 million in cash, as adjusted for the assumption of options and other items,” according to a press release. After launching three years ago, Twitch has become the definitive source for live-streaming of video game content, both from amateur players as well as major companies, including Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, who all streamed content through Twitch during the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year. Hacker bomb threat diverts flight carrying Sony Online president

by Owen S. Good The hacker group claiming responsibility for today’s PlayStation Network outage sent a bomb threat, via Twitter, about an American Airlines flight carrying Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley. Smedley has confirmed he is on the flight and that it was diverted for security reasons. “Something about security and our cargo. Sitting on Tarmac,” Smedley tweeted. Polygon has reached out to representatives of Sony Computer Entertainment America, SOE and the Phoenix office of the FBI for additional comment. An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed to The Arizona Republic that Flight 362 was diverted for security reasons. Earlier this afternoon, the hacker group that says it brought down PSN tweeted this threat to American Airlines’ account. A tweet since […]

Rockstar’s PS3 Exclusive Agent’s Cancellation Reported by GameFly

by Giuseppe Nelva After the confirmation in 2010 that Rockstar’s PS3 exclusive cold war stealth action game Agent was still in development, not much has been heard about the game, besides a pair of trademarks registered last year. Apparently, though, it may have been canceled, at least according to a mail that retailer Gamefly is sending to its customers who had Agent in their GameQ, as reported by NeoGAF user Fine Ham Abounds. “Dear *, We have removed Agent (PS3) from your GameQ. There are two possible reasons for this removal: 1. For released titles, we no longer carry the game and do not know if or when we will acquire new copies. 2. For unreleased titles, the game has […]

Sony Cancels Many inFAMOUS: First Light Pre-Orders Due to a “Technical Error”

by Giuseppe Nelva Apparently a few wires were crossed at Sony, and the company is now sending e-mail messages to customers that pre-ordered inFAMOUS: First Light mentioning that their pre-order has been canceled due to a “technical error.” While we don’t know the magnitude of the issue, at the moment, it definitely seems quite widespread, as shown by multiple reports springing up on Twitter, NeoGAF and Reddit. The problem seems to be limited to European customers for now, and Sony Computer Entertainment promised in the cancellation notices that they would still receive Fetch’s costume offered as a pre-order bonus regardless of their pre-order’s status. Those affected haven’t been charged, and strangely, in multiple cases, they are reporting that they still […]

Final Fantasy XV’s Lead Programmer Kentaro Yasui Leaves Square Enix

by Saqib Mansoor Kentaro Yasui, the lead programmer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XV title is being reported to have had left Square Enix. There has been no official announcement made by the studio yet. Hence, it’s unknown as to why Yasui left and if his departure will have any major impact on the game’s development. Earlier today Kentaro Yasui’s name was spotted on a listing for an outside project called Chaos Centurions. The upcoming mobile game is being produced by Oriflamme, a new developer led by another Final Fantasy alumni Ryuji Ikeda. Additionally a trailer for the title mentions Kentaro Yasui as part of the team, suggesting his departure from Square Enix. Nova Crystallis, who broke the story first, […]

Sony Says They’re Looking Into Crippling PS4 Glitch

by Jason Schreier Sony tells Kotaku they’ve “made progress” toward solving a PS4 glitch that has prevented some users from buying or playing games on their new PlayStation consoles. The “CE-33945-4” glitch, which was reported by PS4 owners on NeoGAF and the PlayStation forums, prevents users from playing games or accessing any other services on the PlayStation Network, including Netflix. Though the exact causes of the glitch are murky, some users determined that it may be triggered by pre-ordering a digital game on the PlayStation Network and then canceling it through Sony customer support, which leads to some sort of database error. This one’s brutal: people getting CE-33945-4 say they can’t play anything. I reached out to Sony earlier this […]

Microsoft pulls plug on free-to-play Xbox 360 game Ascend: Hand of Kul

by Michael McWhertor Microsoft is shutting down the Xbox 360 version of free-to-play action-RPG Ascend: Hand of Kul in November, the company announced today, and has already pulled the game from the Xbox Games Store. Developer Signal Studios said in an update on Wednesday that Microsoft discontinued support of Ascend and recently pulled the game from the Xbox marketplace. The change appears to have taken Signal Studios somewhat by surprise, as the developer said the discontinuation of Ascend “surfaced to us while investigating various issues players have been experiencing over the weekend.” “We are deeply saddened by this decision and the impact it has on our community,” Signal Studios said in a statement. Ascend: Hand of Kul is still available in beta […]
