What a time to be alive, as we find ourselves in the heart of a renaissance of video game adaptations! It is a treat to end a day beating a game I’ve wanted to complete and then sitting back on the couch to watch my comfort characters
in a feature film or series afterward!
While not every video game-inspired motion picture in the past was radical, notable exceptions have stunned and captured hearts.
In recent years, we have seen Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, released in 2019. It is a wacky spin on the classic, adorable, electrifying character from the Pokémon franchise.
Sonic The Hedgehog got his turn in 2020. And as we all may remember, there was backlash regarding Sonic’s design due to the release of that hideously hilarious teaser trailer. People pointed out on social media how unsettling his human teeth were. He is a hedgehog, after all! He looked far too realistic and lacked his cartoonish charm. And so the film’s release date was pushed back, and the designers returned to the drawing board to redo Sonic’s design to appeal to fans.
The follow-up trailer reintroduced Sonic to his true potential, which satisfied the audience and saved the movie from a helicopter flop. Sonic The Hedgehog was received so well that two more follow-up movies were in high demand. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was released last year in 2022, and now, there is an upcoming third part set to hit theaters in 2024.
And now, additional game-to-film translations have either already arrived or are on the way for later this year.
The Last Of Us (premiered January 15th, 2023)
The Last Of Us is already on its second episode. Developer Naughty Dog worked hand-in-hand with HBO to bring one of the best game-to-film translations to the screen in quite some time. The first episode premiered on HBO Max on the 15th, and it is spectacularly done! So if you’re a fan of The Last Of Us and have yet to watch this series, it’s not too late to jump in!
Super Mario Bros. The Movie (April 7th, 2023)
Super Mario Bros. The Movie is the only video game-based movie, to my knowledge, that is coming out this year. The film was announced last year with official teasers supporting the news, hyping the excitement of long-time fans of this iconic Italian plumber who rescues a princess from the terrorizing turtle, Koopa King. It’s beautiful how many generations have been touched by the Mario franchise, which consists of countless games for Nintendo systems. It is a delight for adults who played Mario during their childhood to see this as a theatrical release. It will certainly be a form of nostalgia for old and young alike.
The Witcher: Season 3 (Summer 2023)
The Witcher is another video game-based tv series with two seasons, beginning with its first in 2019. These seasons are now available for binge-watching on Netflix. Season 3’s exact date is still to be determined, but this new season is expected to premiere sometime this summer. So fans of this game and series have a few more months to get caught up and ready for season 3!
