With 2023 only a few days away, it’s an exciting time as a new gaming year that will undoubtedly bring new and pre-existing titles to our game library draws near.
How the new year will define our industry is not yet written, but I will present the facts from what little information I glean on upcoming games, starting with January 2023.
One Piece Odyssey
One Piece Odyssey, based on the late 90’s anime, commemorates the 25th anniversary of this longtime brand. It stars Captain Monkey.D.Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew, caught in an unexpected storm at sea, find themselves stranded on the luxuriant, mysterious island called Waford, and separated from each other. Even more thrilling, Bandai Namco and ILCA will release a demo for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X on the 10th. Any saves made on the demo can be transferred to the full game when it launches! One Piece Odyssey will be released on the 12th in Japan and on January 13th worldwide.
Fire Emblem: Engage
Each year seems to have its own entry in the Fire Emblem series, and 2023 is no different with Fire Emblem Engage. This copious franchise has blown up in popularity, naturally resulting in hit sequels and spin-offs for the Nintendo Switch. In 2019, we got Three Houses; in 2022, we got Three Hopes; and next year, we’ll have Engage, which takes place one thousand years after the emblems of the world defeated the fell dragon and where the resurrection of evil takes place as the magic binding the fell dragon weakens. You play as the divine dragon from a respected family of deities asleep for a thousand years, waking in the nick of time to help fight the evil as it spreads across the land. The ability to summon and fight alongside iconic characters like Marth, Roy, Ike, Corrin, and Byleth will also be an option. Fire Emblem: Engage will be out on January 20th.
Luminous Productions and Square Enix bring Forespoken, a crisp new IP for PlayStation 5 and PC. In this original fantasy, you play as a young woman from modern-day New York named Frey, who is transported to a mystical realm and gains enormous powers. Forspoken was delayed this year for further polishing, so its January 24th, 2023, scheduled release is a highly anticipated date for all gamers.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
Our underwater, anthropomorphic, yellow, and bubbly sponge who charmed our childhood and annoyed the adults in our lives returns in another 3D platformer in which you play as SpongeBob who navigates through ‘Wishworlds’ with his faithful companion, Patrick, now turned into a balloon. Look for it on January 31st.
